It's a moment which has made global headlines, and what happened inside the cockpit of a light plane just before it crash landed on a golf course on Sydney's Northern Beaches has been revealed.

The trainee pilot and his instructor are now safely home after walking away from the wreck with a few cuts and bruises.

Trainee Brian Welch was control of the Piper Cherokee yesterday, with his instructor Ross Curracan by his side.

They were looping around Sydney on their way from Camden back to their flying school in Shellharbour.

But halfway, their engine failed off the Northern Beaches.

They lost altitude fast and crash landed at Mona Vale Golf Club.

Incredibly the pair walked away from the wreck with just minor cuts and scrapes.

This morning's tee times went ahead as usual – but with one unusual hazard on the course.

Workers faced a bigger maintenance job than they're used to.

The plane's owner Simon Thomas was at the Swans game yesterday when he got the call.

"First made sure they were OK, that was the main concern and yeah went from there," he said. "It's been wild."

He only bought the plane last October last year for his 19-year-old son to learn to fly in.

Airspeed Flight School Shellharbour praised "the instructors' skill and ability to keep a cool head in a critical situation".

The plane is damaged beyond repair, and what's left of it is going to be hauled away for the scrap heap.

Heavy machinery was brought in to lug the twisted 900-kilograms of metal off the course so the damaged grass can start to be patched up.

Thomas said he'll "have to talk to his wife" about if he's going to replace it.

An underworld figure has been identified as one of the victims of a Sydney pub shooting that left one person dead.

Maradona Yalda, 31, has links to the underworld and a price on his head – but he survived the deadly attack which took place at the Harold Park Hotel on Ross Street, Forest Lodge about 6.40pm yesterday.

His friend Gilbert Shino, 39, wasn't so lucky.

Shino was known to police but it is believed he was in the wrong place at the wrong time when the Harold Park Hotel was sprayed with bullets.

He died from multiple gunshot wounds at the scene.

The pair had spent the afternoon at the Inner West pub while gunmen outside waited for the moment to attack.

Bullets that didn't hit the men ended up ricocheting across the packed pub, narrowly missing staff.

One bullet ended up in Lauren's home next to the pub.

"It sounded really close, it sounded like a bullet ricocheting off my front metal gate," she told 9News.

"I got low, I got under the bed, I grabbed my phone… and called my partner and said I think I've heard bullets."

Police confirmed it was a targeted attack.

The two men had been watching UFC 319 onscreen at the pub, before leaving to go to their car.

Maradona was seriously injured but is now in a stable condition.

Police said he was shot while running for his life back towards the pub, and was found "slumped over a garbage bin" on Alfred Road.

Detective Superintendent Alfio Sergi told media this morning that Shino died near the car on Wigram Street.

Witnesses reported hearing between six and 12 gunshots with multiple bullet casings found by police at the scene.

One local told the Sydney Morning Herald she saw one of the men shot about six times.

"He had been shot multiple times, at least six times," she said.

A major hunt is ongoing for the people responsible for the deadly shooting.

Police are also working to stop a retaliation attack.

"Obviously (we are) looking at links with organised crime networks, that'll be the focus of our investigation," Sergi said earlier today.

A Melbourne suburb has been rocked by another aggravated burglary less than 24 hours after a father was slashed with a machete 11 times at a home just minutes away during a home invasion.

Police are investigating after two cars were allegedly stolen from a home in Kew early today while a family, including children, slept inside.

The unknown offenders tried to break into a home on Brazier Grove shortly after 3am but were unsuccessful, police said.

It is alleged the offenders then entered a residence on the same street and stole car keys and two cars: a red Mazda sedan and a gold Toyota Camry just before 3.30am.

CCTV footage captured two people dressed in hooded jumpers attempting to break into the first home, before giving up and walking away.

The family inside were sleeping at the time of the burglary.

"We're actually pretty lucky that no one woke up and confronted the intruders," the homeowner told 9News.

"We're just lucky that the kids are OK and everyone's safe."

No arrests have been made and police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00.

In a separate incident, a Melbourne father was allegedly stabbed 11 times with a machete during a violent robbery at a home around 4km away in Kew East early yesterday morning.

The 39-year-old man was attempting to fight against a gang who broke into his home on Oxford Street about 4am.

Allegedly armed with a knife and machete, the offenders used garden shears from the shed to smash a window.

Police claim the man's wife was forced into a separate room with their two sleeping toddlers as the group sped off in the couple's car.

The injured man was left with a fractured arm, cuts to his face and will need to undergo eye surgery.

His parents, aged 69 and 70, were allegedly also cut and bruised as they tried to help.

Police allege the group stole the family's BMW before dumping it across town in Deer Park.

Two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, along with a 24-year-old man have all been charged with multiple offences in relation to the incident, including false imprisonment, aggravated home invasion and intentionally cause serious injury.

Two males who are believed to have been involved in the incident remain on the run.

The 24-year-old Caroline Springs man was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court in November.

The 17-year-old from the Frankston area and the 16-year-old also from the Caroline Springs area were both remanded to appear at a children's court at a later date.

"What happened in in Kew is awful and our thoughts are with the family that has affected by that terrible incident," said Victoria's Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams.

"There is no place for that type of behaviour in our state, no place at all."

Victoria Police's Leanne Trusler said she has never seen anything like this incident before.

"There's nothing to indicate it being premeditated, they've just chosen this house and destroyed a family," she said.

A neo-Nazi accused of intimidating a police officer online has described the charges laid against him as false shortly after his bail was extended.

Thomas Sewell, 31, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court, charged with intimidating a police officer and multiple personal safety intervention order breaches following police raids targeting the National Socialist Network in November.

Sewell, who represented himself, was accompanied by six people, dressed in black with the group's insignia displayed on their shoulders.

Despite being listed as a three-day contested hearing today, the case was adjourned after prosecutor Louis Andrews flagged issues with a key witness.

Andrews requested the case be adjourned for at least four weeks after an issue arose with the witness over the weekend.

Sewell expressed concern about the delay, telling Magistrate Michelle Hodgson that he wished to speed up this process.

The stop-start hearing lasted several hours, as Sewell pushed to press ahead.

Hodgson ruled in favour of an adjournment, stating that the witness was key to the prosecution's case, but set a "very short return date" of two weeks.

Sewell previously waived his rights of seeking further legal advice and successfully fast-tracked his case, which is now scheduled for September 1.

Details of the alleged offending were not read in court.

His bail was extended with conditions.

Speaking outside court, Sewell revealed a warrant is out for his arrest following an alleged assault at a march he attended on August 9.

‘Special character’ designation will also disappear in parts of the city under a new plan.
