A Sydney mother has shared a warning after her son had a scary reaction to a henna tattoo while on a family holiday in Indonesia.

Kerrie-Anne Graf told 9news.com.au she and her 13-year-old son were at Kuta Beach, on the south-west coast of Bali last month, when they both made a spur-of-the-moment decision to get a henna tattoo.

The henna tattoos worked out great and were a big hit with her son, Graf said.

However, a few days later, the pattern had started to fade. 

So, when the family was at Seminyak Beach and some locals came past touting henna tattoos for $10, her son asked if he could have the tattoo on his arm redone, Graf said.

"These guys just walk up and down the beach and they've got their book with dragons.

"You're there with your kids and they're saying, 'Mum, I want a tattoo'."

Unlike the first henna tattoo she and her son got, which was a traditional brown colour, the second tattoo on her son's leg was black, Graf said.

"He got it done the day before we left Bali and it seemed fine," she said.

"Then he started itching at it and, maybe two days later, it just blew up."

Graf said her son's arm became extremely swollen and developed a rash.

"At first, I just thought maybe it was nothing serious. But then the rash started to spread up his arm," she said.

When her son was sent home from school because his arm was weeping, Graf took him to the GP, who prescribed antibiotics.

"They did nothing, so we went back and he got a double dose of really strong antibiotics," she said.

In addition, Graf said her son needed to take steroid medication, antihistamines and apply cream to his arm.

"I've spent over $140 on medication," she said.

Graf said she wanted to warn other families travelling to Bali about the risk of henna tattoos.

After making a post on a popular Bali travel Facebook page, Graf was inundated with comments from other Australians who had suffered similar reactions to henna tattoos in Bali.

A 2019 investigation by 9News examined the dangers of "black henna" tattoos offered in Bali and found they were leaving some Australian tourists with permanent scars.

At the time, 9News found the "black henna" used by some operators in Kuta was made from hair dye containing paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a chemical that as many as one in five people are allergic to when it's applied to their skin.

Graf said she believed it was this black hair dye that was applied to her son's skin.

"It shocked me because I had never heard of that happening."

The mum said she was still very worried her son could be left with permanent scars.

"I can't put anything on it yet, like Bio Oil, because I think it will just irritate it more.

"So I'm just going to wait, and we're probably going have to see a dermatologist."

Graf she said hoped sharing her son's experience would make other tourists think twice.

"I wanted to say something because I don't want this to happen to any other kid," she said.

Millions of Australians on the east coast should brace for a "vigorous" weather system from tonight, which is forecast to bring several days of heavy rain, damaging surf and strong wind.

The coast of New South Wales from Coffs Harbour all the way to Bega in the south is expected to be hit with a fast-moving coastal low and the Bureau of Meteorology warned it may also hammer the Sydney metropolitan area.

"This is a very dynamic and fast-moving system, very different to the systems that we have seen in recent times," NSW SES Deputy Commissioner Debbie Platz warned.

Heavy rain and damaging winds are expected to ramp up by tonight, with the most intense weather set to smash the coast by Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday morning.

Bureau of Meteorology's Steve Bernasconi said the low is deepening off the north coast right now and will likely evolve this evening.

Around 50 to 120mm of rainfall could drench the east, south and mid-north coast of NSW, including Sydney, and some isolated showers could reach up to 200mm.

"It'll bring widespread impacts. The position and the strength of the low will determine the duration and the severity of the impacts, which may persist into Thursday," Bernasconi said.

He said it has become a "vigorous coastal low" and is complex and dynamic, meaning it is difficult to forecast just how severe the weather will be.

The NSW SES urged impacted residents to prepare for cyclonic conditions.

"We are prepared here, at SES," Platz said.

"But what we need is for you to be prepared. You out there in the community need to start preparing for this weather event."

Platz warned people to clean gutters, to move or tie down loose items like outdoor furniture and trampolines and to move cars away from large trees.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued hazardous wind and surf warnings for the NSW coast.

An initial flood watch warning is also in place for the Hawkesbury-Nepean, Georges, Cooks, Sydney Coast, and Illawarra Coast catchments.

The developing system has been dubbed a potential "bomb cyclone" – a rapidly forming system that goes from non-existence to threatening in just days.

It could also be the first east coast low to hit Sydney since 2022.

While some rain and wind is expected today, the heaviest weather is expected to hit tomorrow, particularly in Sydney.

Up to 90mm of rain is forecast for the NSW capital in just 24 hours.

Sustained winds of 45km/h, with gusts of 125km/h, are predicted by the Bureau.

Many Australian lottery winners aren't splurging their cash on big-ticket items like cars or houses after taking home their winnings, according to a new report.

The Lott surveyed division one winners from 2024 – who won a combined $1.56 billion – on how they spent their millions, and most said they either invested in the future or lavished family and friends with gifts.

More than half of the winners said they set themselves up for the future with investments, while 38 per cent said they helped out loved ones with their shock windfall.

The Lott spokesperson Anna Hobdell said these results aren't surprising for division one winners, who take home life-changing amounts of money.

"Winners often tell us their bodies go into overdrive the moment they hear the life-changing news, with hearts racing, hands trembling, and even a wave of nausea setting in," Hobdell said.

"But once the news sinks in, most winners can't wait to share the joy with people in the know.

"After the initial shock wears off, many winners are quick to tell their partners, family, or closest mates. 

"Only about eight per cent keep it completely under wraps and tell absolutely no one."

Plenty of lucky winners decided to buy some unique items, including a pair of hand-crafted leather shoes, a set of watches for their family, a hair transplant in Turkey, and some electric mountain bikes.

Another 33 per cent of winners said they bought a new car, but only 19 per cent reported buying a new house.

Some said they decided to travel the world with their newfound fortune, flying to destinations such as Thailand, Bali, Phuket, the Gold Coast and Alaska.

And 17 per cent of the surveyed winners said they used their prize to donate to charity.

One newly deep-pocketed Aussie simply updated their old washing machine.

Reflecting on the life-changing injection into their bank account, a few winners also shared their advice for future lottery recipients.

"Treat your win as an opportunity to improve your circumstances, so don't waste it," one said.

"Tell very few people and write down who you told," another warned.

People have been warned about trusting "Dr Google" for years – but AI is opening up a disturbing new world of dangerous health misinformation.

A new, first-of-its kind global study, led by researchers from the University of South Australia, Flinders University, Harvard Medical School, University College London, and the Warsaw University of Technology, has revealed how easily chatbots can be – and are – programmed to deliver false medical and health information.

In the study, researchers evaluated five of the most advanced and prominent AI systems, developed by OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Meta, and X Corp.

Using instructions available only to developers, the researchers programmed each AI system – designed to operate as chatbots when embedded in web pages – to produce incorrect responses to health queries and include fabricated references from highly reputable sources to sound more authoritative and credible.

The "chatbots" were then asked a series of health-related questions.

"In total, 88 per cent of all responses were false," UniSA researcher Dr Natansh Modi said.

"And yet they were presented with scientific terminology, a formal tone and fabricated references that made the information appear legitimate.

"The disinformation included claims about vaccines causing autism, cancer-curing diets, HIV being airborne and 5G causing infertility."

Out of the five chatbots that were evaluated, four generated disinformation in 100 per cent of their responses, while the fifth generated disinformation in 40 per cent of its responses, showing some degree of robustness.

As part of the study, Modi and his team also explored the OpenAI GPT Store, a publicly accessible platform that allows users to create and share customised ChatGPT apps, to assess the ease with which the public could create disinformation tools.

"We successfully created a disinformation chatbot prototype using the platform and we also identified existing public tools on the store that were actively producing health disinformation," he said.

Modi said that these findings revealed a significant and previously under-explored risk in the health sector.

"Artificial intelligence is now deeply embedded in the way health information is accessed and delivered," he said.

"Millions of people are turning to AI tools for guidance on health-related questions."

He said AI systems could be manipulated to produce a powerful new avenue for disinformation that would be more persuasive than any other.

"This is not a future risk. It is already possible, and it is already happening," he said.

Modi said there was a path forward away from this scenario, but that developers, regulators, and public health stakeholders had to act "now".

"Some models showed partial resistance, which proves the point that effective safeguards are technically achievable," he said.

"However, the current protections are inconsistent and insufficient.

"Without immediate action, these systems could be exploited by malicious actors to manipulate public health discourse at scale, particularly during crises such as pandemics or vaccine campaigns."

US President Donald Trump has urged progress in ceasefire talks in the 20-month war in Gaza, as Israel and Hamas appeared to move closer to an agreement.

A top adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ron Dermer, was set to travel to Washington this week for talks on a ceasefire, an Israeli official said, and plans were being made for Netanyahu to travel there in the coming weeks, a sign there may be movement on a deal.

The official declined to discuss the visit's focus and spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss plans that had not been finalised.

"MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!!" Trump wrote on social media early on Sunday (Sunday night AEST).

Trump raised expectations on Friday for a deal, saying there could be an agreement within the next week.

Trump has repeatedly called for Israel and Hamas to end the war in Gaza. An eight-week ceasefire was reached just as he took office earlier this year, but Israel resumed the war in March after trying to get Hamas to accept new terms on next steps.

Some Palestinians greeted the possibility of a new truce with scepticism after watching the last ceasefire shattered.

"Since the beginning of the war, they have been promising us something like this: Release the hostages and we will stop the war," said Abdel Hadi Al-Hour.

"They did not stop the war."

Trump post slams Netanyahu corruption trial

Trump also doubled down on his criticism of the legal proceedings against Netanyahu, who is on trial for alleged corruption, calling it "a POLITICAL WITCH HUNT".

In the post on Saturday evening (Sunday morning AEST), Trump said the trial interfered with ceasefire talks.

He [Netanyahu] is right now in the process of negotiating a Deal with Hamas, which will include getting the Hostages back," Trump wrote.

"How is it possible that the Prime Minister of Israel can be forced to sit in a Courtroom all day long, over NOTHING."

Last week, Trump called for the trial to be cancelled. It was a dramatic interference by an ally in the domestic affairs of a sovereign state. It unnerved many in Israel, despite Trump's popularity there.

The trial has repeatedly been postponed at Netanyahu's request, citing security and diplomatic developments. On Sunday, the court agreed to call off two more days of testimony by him scheduled this week.

Major sticking point over how the war ends

Talks between Israel and Hamas have repeatedly faltered over a major sticking point: whether the war should end as part of any ceasefire agreement.

Hamas official Mahmoud Merdawi accused Netanyahu of stalling progress on a deal, saying on social media that the Israeli leader insists on a temporary agreement that would free just 10 of the hostages. About 50 hostages remain, with less than half believed to be alive.

Netanyahu spokesperson Omer Dostri said "Hamas was the only obstacle to ending the war", without addressing Merdawi's claim.

Hamas says it is willing to free all the hostages in exchange for a full withdrawal of Israeli troops and an end to the war. Israel rejects that offer, saying it will agree to end the war if Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile, something the group refuses.

The war in Gaza began with the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack in which militants killed 1200 people and took roughly 250 hostage.

Gaza's Health Ministry on Sunday said another 88 people have been killed by Israeli fire over the past 24 hours, raising the war's toll among Palestinians to 56,500.

The ministry, which operates under the Hamas government, does not distinguish between militants and civilians in its count but says more than half of the dead are women and children.

The war has displaced most of Gaza's population, often multiple times, obliterated much of the territory's urban landscape and left people overwhelmingly reliant on outside aid, which Israel has limited since the end of the latest ceasefire.

Fewer than half of Gaza's hospitals are even partly functional, and more than 4000 children need medical evacuation abroad, a new UN humanitarian assessment says.

"We are exhausted, we are tired. We hope to God that the war will end," said one Palestinian, Mahmoud Wadi.

Israeli military orders new evacuations in northern Gaza

The Israeli military ordered a mass evacuation of Palestinians in large swaths of northern Gaza, home to hundreds of thousands of people who had returned during the ceasefire earlier this year.

Colonel Avichay Adraee, a military spokesperson, posted the order on social media. It includes multiple neighbourhoods in eastern and northern Gaza City, as well as the Jabaliya refugee camp.

The military will expand its escalating attacks westward to the city's centre, calling for people to move toward the Muwasi area in southern Gaza, Adraee said.

An Israeli military offensive aims to move Palestinians to southern Gaza so forces can more freely operate to combat militants. Rights groups say their movement would amount to forcible displacement.

British police say they are examining videos of a band that led chants of "death to the IDF" — Israel Defence Forces — at Glastonbury Festival.

Rapper Bobby Vylan, of rap punk duo Bob Vylan, led crowds attending the festival in chants of "free, free Palestine" and "death, death to the IDF" on Saturday.

Avon and Somerset Police said video evidence would be assessed by officers "to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation".

The Israeli Embassy to the UK said on social media that it was "deeply disturbed by the inflammatory and hateful rhetoric expressed on stage at the Glastonbury Festival".

Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Sunday condemned the band's actions as "appalling".

He told Sky News that the BBC and festival organisers had to answer questions about how the comments were broadcast live to millions.

However, he also urged Israel to "take the violence of their own citizens towards Palestinians more seriously" when asked about the Israeli embassy's condemnation of the band's actions.

The minister referred to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and "the fact that Israeli settler terrorists attacked a Christian village this week, setting it on fire", and urged Israel to "get your own house in order".

The government said its culture secretary spoke to the BBC director general about Bob Vylan's performance.

The BBC said it issued a warning on screen about "very strong and discriminatory language" during the live stream.

Glastonbury is Britain's biggest summer music festival and draws some 200,000 music fans each year to Worthy Farm in southwest England. Almost 4000 acts perform on 120 stages.

Festival organisers said on Instagram that Vylan's chants "very much crossed a line".

"We are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the Festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence," they said.

"With almost 4000 performances at Glastonbury 2025, there will inevitably be artists and speakers appearing on our stages whose views we do not share, and a performer's presence here should never be seen as a tacit endorsement of their opinions and beliefs."

Saturday's festival lineup also included Irish-language rap group Kneecap, which gave an impassioned performance for tens of thousands of fans despite criticism by British politicians and a terror charge for one of the trio.

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, has been charged under the Terrorism Act with supporting a proscribed organisation for allegedly waving a Hezbollah flag at a concert in London in November.

The rapper, who was charged under the anglicised version of his name, Liam O'Hanna, is on unconditional bail before a further court hearing in August.

The group has faced criticism for lyrics laden with expletives and drug references, and for political statements, especially since videos emerged allegedly showing the band shouting "up Hamas, up Hezbollah" and calling on people to kill lawmakers.

On Saturday, band members led the audience in chants of "Free Palestine" and "Free Mo Chara".

They also aimed an expletive-laden chant at UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has said he didn't think it was "appropriate" for Kneecap to play Glastonbury.

Rod Stewart, Olivia Rodrigo and The Prodigy are among acts playing Sunday for Glastonbury's final day.

The former Greens candidate injured during her arrest at a pro-Palestine protest in Sydney's south-west has been charged. 

Hannah Thomas, who needed surgery for facial injuries, is among five facing charges stemming from the "unauthorised" demonstration that saw police clash with protesters in Belmore on Saturday.

The 35-year-old, who ran against Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in his seat of Grayndler in the most recent federal election, was hurt during the heated protest on Friday morning.

Images show her with one swollen eye closed and blood down her face.

In a statement, the Greens said "NSW Police violently attacked and assaulted protestors at the 'peaceful' picket".

NSW Greens MLC Sue Higginson told The Guardian "it was possible she [Thomas] may lose vision in that eye".

Police said about 60 protesters were blocking access to a business on Lakemba Street – which reportedly supplies materials to make weapons – in what they described as an "unauthorised" protest.

They said a "scuffle" broke out between police and protesters and Thomas was taken to Bankstown Hospital.

While the other four charged with offences including refusing or failing to comply with a direction will appear in court next week, Thomas' court date has been set for August.

She was issued a Future Court Attendance Notice for allegedly hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty and refusing or failing to comply with a direction to disperse.

A Melbourne Airbnb has been trashed as teenage gangs clashed when a birthday party was gatecrashed.

One teen ended up in hospital and the stunned property owner was left with a hefty clean-up bill.

The owner says he's done with short-term rentals and is calling for stricter age verification on booking platforms.

About 2am today, a teenager's party in Melton was gatecrashed by another group.

"I was in a state of complete shock, I was speechless," said the owner, who didn't give his name.

"And when I saw bloodstains inside, I was like, 'oh God'.

"My immediate question to police was, 'was anybody injured, was everybody okay?'"

A teenage boy was taken to hospital with cuts to his head.

It's not clear whether he was attacked or injured trying to flee.

The property was booked last-minute for a one-night stay.

And while sites like Airbnb and Booking.com require guests to be at least 18, it's as easy as faking your age to get around it.

"I couldn't sort of figure out if they were teenagers but I knew they were young, they were young," the owner said.

"I don't know who came and stayed here. Yhere were no ID checks performed by these platforms to make sure they are held accountable.

"Because currently, their accountability is minimal."

But the responsibility falls on the landlord, and he's had enough.

"This is too much stress. I can't handle this. It's too much stress, too much out-of-pocket expense, and I'm a bit worried about the neighbours as well, now," he said.

In a rush to escape, some of the teens ran across the yard and used a tree stump to jump over the fence and onto the neighbour's roof.

A teenage boy has serious injuries after being bitten by a shark at a beach on the NSW North Coast.

Emergency services were called to Cabarita Beach, between Tweed Heads and Byron Bay, at 3.50pm on Sunday after the attack.

The teen suffered injuries to his right upper arm, wrist and right leg.

He was airlifted to to Gold Coast University Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a serious but stable condition.

Surfers and an off-duty paramedic from just over the border in Queensland were on the beach at the time and rushed to his aid, applying a tourniquet to stem the bleeding.

A second chopper went looking for the shark.

Cabarita Beach will be closed for 24 hours.
