Two men have been arrested after off-duty police officers were allegedly attacked on a busy Sydney road, with one left needing CPR.

The two constables, both aged 25, were leaving a concert in Newtown when they came across a group having a "heated" discussion on Enmore Road around 11pm yesterday.

One officer, who was allegedly knocked to the ground then repeatedly punched and kicked in the head, was left unconscious and witnesses helped perform CPR on him before paramedics arrived.

He remains at Royal Prince Alfred hospital in a serious condition.

The second officer who facial injuries has since been released from hospital.

Police arrested an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old man at a home in Mascot about 3.20pm today.

They have been taken to Mascot Police Station.

No charges have been laid yet.

Earlier, NSW Police Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald said police were hunting three persons of interest after the assault.

"I'm confident, we have positive lines of inquiries," Fitzgerald told media today.

"We will be hunting down those persons of interest, we will be knocking on your door, so if you have anything you want to say, please hand yourselves in to police."

Fitzgerald thanked the witnesses who rendered CPR on the seriously injured officer and said "anything could have happened" if they weren't there to help.

She said police were looking for any CCTV, dashcam or phone footage of the "violent, confronting and distressing" incident.

NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley thanked the witnesses, including an off-duty nurse, who came to the officers' assistance.

"We have such gratitude for you coming in and helping those officers, particularly that officer with crucial injuries," Catley said.

"The police [officers] themselves are thankful."

She added: "Get these perpetrators and to get them behind bars. This is a dangerous attack and we do not want them on our streets."

Police say the two officers were walking along Enmore Road when they approached three men unknown to them who were having an argument.

"The two off-duty officers were assaulted with one of them knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked to the head," NSW Police said in a statement.

"The second man, also aged 25, suffered facial injuries and was also taken to hospital for treatment; however, has since been released."

The three men behind the attack allegedly fled the scene before police arrived.

Health officials in NSW and Queensland have issued measles warnings after a case of the infectious disease was detected in Western Sydney and at Gold Coast Airport.

NSW Health said a person had arrived in Sydney on a flight from Vietnam, which is currently experiencing a measles outbreak.

Although the person was not infectious on the flight, NSW Health said that anyone who visited the same places as the person should monitor for symptoms.

Anyone who visited Family Doctors Berala, on Saturday, January 18 between 10am and 11.15am should check for signs of infection.

Queensland Health officials also said that a person with measles had been on the Gold Coast while unknowingly infectious.

They said that anyone on Qantas flight QF596 from Sydney Domestic Airport to Gold Coast Airport, which arrived at 9.30pm on January 17 should check for symptoms.

The person was also at Gold Coast Airport until about 10.15pm.

Gold Coast Health said the case had also been acquired overseas but did not specify in what country.

Measles is highly infectious and is spread by tiny droplets through coughing and sneezing.

It causes fevers, coughing, runny noses, and a red spotty rash and sore eyes a few days later.

Symptoms usually start around 7 to 10 days after contact with a person with measles, but it cant take 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure.

"We want to remind the community to make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations. Everyone should check that they are protected against measles, which is highly infectious," South Western Sydney Local Health District Director of Public Health, Dr Mitchell Smith said.

"Anyone born after 1965 needs to make sure they have had two doses of measles vaccine. This is especially important before overseas travel. Measles outbreaks are occurring in several regions of the world at the moment."

Health officials stressed that vaccination against measles is the most effective way for the community to protect themselves from measles.

Police are searching for a man who allegedly stole two cars with children inside – including two babies – along the Great Eastern Highway in Western Australia.

CCTV footage shows a shirtless man jumping into an Orange Kia Sportage and closing the door in Somerville near Gatacre Drive in Kalgoorie at 4.05pm yesterday as a woman ran after him and attempted to open the door.

The woman tried to hold onto the door as the man pulled out of a driveway, but was forced to let go of the door as the car started to speed off.

There was a child inside the car, who police later found safe and well.

Police said 15 minutes earlier the unknown man stole a white Kia Sorento station sedan on Great Eastern Highway in West Kalgoorlie at 3.50pm while two babies were inside it.

They were also found inside the car safe and well by police a short time late.

Police have launched a search for the man, who is described as being approximately 160cm tall with a slim build and dark complexion.

He was wearing black track suit pants, a black hoodie and carrying a white clutch bag.
