Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed during a hunting accident in Victoria's alpine region.

Investigators say the man was hunting with a group along the McCready Track, Rose River when he was hit by a fatal gunshot wound about 9.30am.

The exact circumstances of the man's death are still being investigated and the other hunters are assisting police with their enquiries.
