An early summer heatwave is on the way for a vast swathe of the nation's north, with areas as far south as Brisbane to see a blast of high temperatures.

The summer's first intense bout of heat is forecast to hit tomorrow and last for three days.

Forecasters say temperatures will be higher than usual, with some areas to hit 46C.

"Heat is building across much of Australia, with severe to locally extreme heatwave conditions developing. Maximum temperatures will be 4C to 8C above average this week across northern Australia," the Bureau of Meteorology said in a tweet.

It warned of "severe to extreme heatwave conditions across much of the Pilbara and Northern Interior of WA, parts of western NT and parts of northwest Queensland".

The weather bureau also warned of heatwave conditions over "most of central and north Australia", which includes northern South Australia and parts of the coast, but excludes Cape York in Queensland and Gascoyne in WA.

Weatherzone also said Australia's north will be "hotter than usual," with warm tropical seas partly to blame.

The heat in the northern areas will continue into the weekend, but Brisbane will cool off.

Sydney can expect a balmy 25C on Tuesday, rising to 28C on Wednesday before showers cool it down to 22C on Thursday.
