Bushfire threatening lives and homes in town north of Perth

Fire crews are battling a large bushfire in Western Australia which is threatening homes and lives in Cervantes, about 200 kilometres north of Perth.

About 50 firefighters are battling the blaze, with assistance from aerial support, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

There is currently an extreme fire danger warning in place for a number of districts including Lesueur, which is about 50km from Cervantes.

People living in the Marine Fields Estate have been urged to evacuate north on Indian Ocean Drive towards Jurien Bay, while those living south of the Cervantes Road and Indian Ocean Drive intersection need to leave in a southerly direction towards Lancelin on Indian Ocean Drive.

An evacuation centre has been set up at Jurien Bay Sport and Recreation Centre on Bashford Street.
