A truck driver has died after he hit a cow in Victoria's west this morning.

The 39-year-old struck the cow on Hendy Main Road in Moriac near Geelong about 6.15am.

Victoria Police said he veered off the road after hitting the cow and crashed into a tree.

"Emergency crews tried to save him, but sadly the Caroline Springs man died at the scene," Victoria Police said in a statement.

Officers are urging anyone with footage to come forward.
