Hannah was meant to be singing at Greek resort destroyed by fire

Two Australian singers are struggling to come to terms with the fires raging on the Greek island of Rhodes after the five-star resort they performed in burned down, forcing holidaymakers to flee.

Hannah Gutierrez Cañon is on her way back to Melbourne while her friend and fellow Australian Brooke Kotsos is still on the island, playing to theatres doing double time as shelters for thousands of people evacuated from destroyed or fire-threatened hotels.

Cañon was supposed to be playing at the Lindos Imperial Resort and Spa when it was overrun by flames last week.

But by a twist of fate, the Melbourne woman, who was contracted for the European summer as the lead singer on the El Ritmo latin dance show, had decided she needed to head back Down Under to look after her dance studio.

As Cañon made her way to the airport on Thursday, none the wiser that fires were threatening the island, she was struck by the number of fire trucks, "just little cars", rushing along the roads.

"There was something about the date that kept calling out to me that I needed to be home on that date," she said.

"And surely enough, literally the day was when it (the fire) took place. And what makes it more eerie is the fact that, you know, that was our regular hotel, particularly the show that I'm in, particularly the Latin show, we were always at the Imperial and the Kiotari, which are right next to each other.

"And obviously that was where it was affected and when we were supposed to be there."
