Firefighters have rushed to a Coles in the NSW Northern Rivers region after a car smashed its way through the store.

Photos of the scene on Fox Street in Ballina show the car just centimetres from the end of a shopping aisle, having apparently smashed its way through the store's front doors.

Numerous shoppers and Coles staff can be seen around the vehicle.

Fire and Rescue NSW has confirmed members are performing a rescue at the Coles and assessing the property, which is located on Fox Street in Ballina.

Four people have been assessed for injuries, and of these two were taken to hospitals in Lismore and Ballina.

A Western Australian man accused of killing two motorists in a head-on collision in the US has been released on bail.

Narrogin man Luke Nardini, 31, was driving a BMW M4 on Highway 84 near San Francisco in California on September 1 when he collided with another car on a tight blind turn.

One man and one woman were killed, while two others were hospitalised.

Nardini was charged over the crash.

Nardini posted a $US20,000 ($31,000) bail and had to surrender his passport.

The matter returns to court in October.

A mystery meat dumper has been filling Christchurch’s public bins in recent weeks.

Despite Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka's alleged force and aggression during a date, a Sydney woman has said she still led him into her bedroom and lit candles before being allegedly raped.

The international batter is accused of "stealthing" the alleged victim by removing his condom without her knowledge during sexual activity on November 2, 2022, at her eastern suburbs home.

He has pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual intercourse without consent and denies any wrongdoing.

The pair met on Tinder on October 29 that year and met for the first time at the Opera Bar before having pizza in the Sydney CBD and returning by ferry to her home for further drinks.

The woman, who cannot be legally identified, alleged that Gunathilaka forcefully kissed her on ferry's front outdoor deck and slapped her buttocks in a manner she did not like.

CCTV footage shows her chatting and embracing the cricketer on a side outdoor deck and her playfully waving in front of his phone as he films Sydney Harbour.

After they go back inside the cabin to sit down, the footage shows her holding his hands for a long time before getting up to leave.

As the rape trial continued at Sydney's Downing Centre District Court on Tuesday, the woman claimed the forceful kiss and the slap happened on another area of the ferry where there was no CCTV.

"He did slap my buttocks but I don't know at what point it was while we were on the ferry," she said under cross-examination from Gunathilaka's barrister Murugan Thangaraj SC.

She said she may have also breathed on the cricketer's hands to warm them up while they sat together in the cabin.

"This is after you say that he had taken liberty and upset you by slapping your buttocks?" Thangaraj asked.

"Yes," the woman replied.

She admitted she could have asked the cricketer to go home alone at any point, but invited him into her house where she offered him some wine and played the guitar.

While she told police she had stopped playing because Gunathilaka kept filming her without her permission, footage from his phone played to the court shows her playfully batting the camera away.

She appears to stop playing as the song concludes and smiles into the camera.

Thangaraj suggested claimed events after this, including that Gunathilaka pushed her back onto the lounge and pushed his head forcefully into hers actually didn't happen.

He questioned the woman's claims she led the cricketer into the bedroom even after all this allegedly happened.

"You light candles in the bedroom?" he asked.

"Yes," she said.

"After what you say what happened on the couch?" he pressed.

"Yes," she said again.

The trial being heard by Judge Sarah Huggett without a jury continues.

A group of teens wielding machetes deliberately targeted vulnerable students leaving school on the day they abducted a 14-year-old boy and left him with life-altering injuries, police allege.

The boy remains in hospital and has come out of a six-day induced coma, after three offenders allegedly assaulted him and put him in a stolen car on September 4 in Glen Huntly, Melbourne's south east, a court was told today.

He was allegedly dragged along the road while hanging from a car door for about 150 metres, at high speed, and has suffered bleeding on his brain and swelling around his spinal court after being thrown from the vehicle and then ran over.

A detective told a children's court these injuries were "potentially permanent and life-altering" and included issues with his speaking, sight and memory.

One of three teens charged over the violent after-school attack, a 15-year-old boy from Cranbourne who cannot be named for legal reasons, applied for bail on Tuesday morning.

But police strongly opposed his release into the community after detailing a serious of attacks allegedly committed by the same teens, including driving around in stolen cars, threatening people with machetes and driving into someone on a scooter.

"It's believed they're all random attacks and these offenders have gone on a spree … around school time, 2.30 to 4pm window, targeting vulnerable school kids leaving school," the detective told the court.

"[The boy's] offending is escalating dramatically and he shows no regard for his victims."

A prosecutor labelled the offending as "recent, prolific and extremely serious".

He said the 15-year-old boy's release on bail would present an "extremely serious level of danger" to the community.

"The offending is random, violent, against random young people in the community," he told the court.

"This offending illustrates that the entire community is potentially at risk."

The boy was living in a stolen BMW with his mother when police arrested him on September 9, the court was told.

Their previous Cranbourne address was searched by police, with windows found smashed, doors off hinges and minimal personal items or furniture found inside.

He has asked to live with his sister if he is released on supervised bail, with his defence lawyer arguing he was vulnerable in youth detention due to his young age and because he has an intellectual disability.

The lawyer said the boy has ambitions to become a mechanic and re-engage with schooling or TAFE if he is released.

The magistrate will hand down her decision on the bail application on Wednesday.

Eye doctors are warning of the dangers of swooping season after a Melbourne cyclist was left needing major eye surgery after he was attacked by a magpie.

Christiaan Nyssen required major surgery after he was swooped and pecked in the eye on a ride in Yarrawonga in 2021.

Fortunately, he made a full recovery, thanks to the hard work of Epworth Freemasons' eye surgeon Dr Elvis Ojaimi, who implanted an imported prosthetic iris and lens to fix the damaged eye.

"This is the first one in Victoria, within about four to six weeks, he was seeing very well," Ojaimi said.

With hospital admissions common during swooping season, residents are being warned to be vigilant. 

"I think sunglasses, particularly wraparound sunglasses, are very important," Ojaimi said.

Magpies appear to be getting smarter and even helmets with zip ties are not a safe bet anymore.

"A lot of magpies have learned not to attack the head but they attack the back and they'll get around a helmet," Bird veterinarian Dr Adrian Gallagher said.

Swooping season still has several weeks to go but it is expected to ease at the end of the month.

A man has been arrested after a woman in her 30s was found dead at a home in Melbourne's west.

A major crime scene has been declared in a residential area in Melton South after the woman's body was found at a house on Sutherland Avenue about 1.30pm.

Police have said the man they arrested is assisting with their inquiries.

A large number of police are in the area, with multiple roads blocked off.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics attended the scene.

Witnesses have told 9News they heard a woman screaming and yelling prior to police arriving, and saw a man running down the street with blood-soaked clothing.

"I blood dripping off his hands – a lot of blood – on his legs," a witness said.

"It dripped all over my driveway as well, all over my car."
