Hundreds of residents of a suburb in Melbourne's north have gathered to protest against the closure of its post office, while thousands have signed an online petition.

Actor Ian Smith, who played Harold Bishop on the popular television series Neighbours, was among those who gathered outside Glenroy post office this morning to call for the 136-year-old Australia Post branch to remain open.

He told 9News he thought the decision to permanently close the branch in three weeks was "so wrong".

The protesters have argued the post office should stay open as Glenroy has a high population of people who do not use the internet, speak a language other than English, and over the age of 80.

Many seniors told 9News they relied on the outlet to do their banking and pay their bills.

"We pay most of our bills through the post office," 89-year-old Ken Hills said.

"It's easier."

He said he couldn't believe the "ridiculous" decision to close the office.

An online petition has gained almost 2300 signatures. 

Australia Post has said customer visits at Glenroy Post Shop have fallen by around one-third, with the outlet consistently trading at a loss over the past five years.

Surrounding suburbs of Broadmeadows, Airport West, Pascoe Vale, and Coburg all have Australia Post outlets.

The Mitcham branch in Melbourne's east will also close next week, while Hampton's post office shut its doors in April.

The decision stated lawyers should not have fewer rights to free speech than anyone else.

A school minibus has rolled over in a crash in NSW's Hawkesbury region.

The bus was carrying six children when it collided with a dark grey ute and was overturned near the intersection of Windsor Street and West Market Street in Richmond about 3.20pm.

None of the children have serious injuries.

9News understands the six children had been picked up from their primary school just after 3pm and were being transported to their after school care at Little Sparkles Early Learning Centre in Agnes Banks.

"All the children managed to get out of the bus unassisted," NSW Police said in a statement.

"A number of the children suffered minor cuts and scratches and are being treated on scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics."

Police said the driver was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

"Road diversions are in place and West Market Street remains closed to traffic."

The daycare centre said the bus was fitted with seatbelts.

NSW Ambulance spokesperson Rebecca Tulk said the passengers were extremely lucky.

"It's a timely reminder that we all wear seatbelts whenever we're travelling in a vehicle," Tulk said.

Susan, who witnessed the crash, told 2GB's Chris O'Keefe that the children appeared shaken but were not injured.

"The children I can see are sort of school-aged children, probably primary school-aged," Susan said.

She said the traffic seemed to be flowing well as it was only impacting one small section of the main street in Richmond.

The ute was taken away on a tow truck for examination.
