The couple mourning the deaths of 10 of their wedding guests in the devastating Hunter Valley bus crash has thanked the community for their "love and support" as they request privacy.

The bus had been returning from the wedding reception of Mitchell Gaffney and Madeleine Edsell at the Wandin Valley Estate when it overturned at a roundabout near Greta last Sunday night.

Ten people were killed and almost two dozen more were rushed to hospital.

The couple, who was not on the bus, publicly addressed the tragedy for the first time this afternoon.

"While we appreciate the outpouring of love and support from the community, we ask that the media respect our privacy while we grieve," it said.

"Our primary focus at this time is processing this tragedy, and supporting our family and friends, which is why we'd like to formally decline any requests for media interviews."

Seven patients are still being treated at John Hunter Hospital and all are stable, a spokeswoman for Hunter New England Local Health District said.

Bus driver Brett Button was charged with 10 counts of dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous and negligent driving occasioning death over the crash.

The 58-year-old was granted bail in Cessnock Local Court.

Meanwhile, the groom's father John Gaffney, has urged people to lobby state and country leaders over the wearing of seatbelts on buses.

Gaffney, who works in motorways and road safety according to his LinkedIn profile, wrote: "Hopefully something positive can come out of this tragedy."

"Fifty years ago the fitting and wearing of seat belts became compulsory in Australia for all occupants of motorcars saving countless lives since," he said.

"Whilst my wife and I can't do this on our own we believe ultimately everyone who rides a bus should have access to a seatbelt and be compelled by laws to wear them."

A fund for victims started by the state government has now reached $600,000.

Survivors of a volcanic eruption that killed 22 cruise ship passengers, including 14 Australians, off the coast of New Zealand have succeeded in having back-up legal action in Australia delayed until a Florida court case is decided.

Eleven people, who were on Whakaari, also known as White Island, or aboard the Ovation of the Seas when the volcano erupted in December 2019, are suing the ship's owner Royal Caribbean Cruises in Miami where the company is headquartered.

They argue Royal Caribbean failed to inform passengers about the risks of going on an expedition to the island and are seeking damages.

The cruise operator is attempting to have proceedings thrown out of US court on the basis of a contract clause it claims limits dispute hearings to NSW.

Federal Court Justice Ian Jackman – brother of Wolverine actor Hugh – on Monday ruled in favour of the volcano victims, putting legal action in Australia on hold until it is determined whether the Florida proceedings will be allowed to go ahead.

The Australian proceedings are only intended as "holding action" in case the US lawsuit is thrown out.

"It would be an affront to common sense and fairness if I were to force the applicants to undertake further pre-trial steps in this court in preparation for a trial which may never be needed," Justice Jackman said.

One of the claimants, Jesse Langford, took part in the shore excursion with his parents, Anthony and Kristine, and his sister, Winona.

All three family members were killed and Winona's body was not recovered from the island. Jesse survived the eruption but suffered burns to 54 per cent of his body, causing scarring and disfigurement.

He claims Royal Caribbean ought to have known that the volcanic alert level for the island had been raised from one to two, giving rise to "moderate to heightened volcanic unrest".

The judge said suing the company in Florida would be more beneficial to the claims as they are likely to recover significantly higher damages than in Australia.

It would also offer greater rights to discovery, the power to depose witnesses and the right to a jury trial.

"It is well recognised in Australia that these are legitimate juridical advantages," Justice Jackman said.

In submissions to the Florida court, Royal Caribbean argued the complaints were a "brazen" act of "forum shopping".

The applicants are unable to sue the company in NZ because of the country's no-fault compensation scheme.

White Island Tours – the tour operator contracted by Royal Caribbean to take passengers to the island – on Thursday pleaded guilty in a NZ court to safety failings leading up to the eruption.

It potentially faces a seven-figure fine.

In 2022, Auckland-based scenic flight operator Inflite also pleaded guilty, ordered to pay $NZ267,500 ($A243,000) in fines and costs.

A hearing into Royal Caribbean's bid to have the lawsuit of Bianca Cozad dismissed for improper venue is due to take place in Miami on July 5.

A man has been shot multiple times by police at a home in Bray Park, north of Brisbane.

Police were called to the residence in Burkwell Court around 12.30pm after reports of a domestic incident between a man and a woman.

The 45 year-old-man was allegedly shot by police and was later taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

Detective Inspector Ben Fadian said there were residents home at the address at the time of the shooting.

He confirmed the man who was shot lived within Burkwell Court.

"The circumstances of today's incident may form part of a further investigation down the track in terms of that person's behaviour and activities," Fadian said.

Neighbour Lyn said she heard three distinct shots about 12.42pm.

"I heard it, three very quick gunshots – bang, bang, bang," she said.

The family of a teen killed with a screwdriver by a birthday party gatecrasher say they want his attacker to "rot in hell".

The now 18-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced the Supreme Court of Victoria on Monday after previously pleading guilty to the manslaughter of 17-year-old Jason Langhans.

Crown prosecutor Jane Warren told the court Langhans, an apprentice plumber and keen fisherman, was acting as a peacemaker at the gatecrashed 16th birthday party in Tooradin when he was struck in the head in March 21.

He died three weeks later in hospital.

His attacker was 17 at the time.

Family and friends described Langhans as a "kind and caring" young man who had his life taken away in one fell swoop.

"Who takes a screwdriver to a girl's 16th birthday party?" his grandparents Cheryl and Peter said in their victim impact statement.

"We wish (his attacker) nothing but pain and suffering for the rest of his life. May he rot in hell."

His father Paul Langhans wept while telling the court how he begged for the doctors to "save my boy".

"I watched him take his first breath when he entered the world and watched him take his last," Paul Langhans said.

"My heart is shattered."

The court heard the teen, only referred to as JN, had been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and paranoid schizophrenia.

He had consumed half a bottle of vodka and smoked cannabis before attending the party uninvited, armed with a screwdriver.

He later drove that screwdriver almost 8cm into his victim's brain.

Psychiatrist Rajan Darjee told the court the teen's intoxication, coupled with his PTSD and paranoid schizophrenia was not a good mix.

The court also heard of the teen's early life in Afghanistan, his arrival at Christmas Island detention centre and his poor experience at school once he moved to the mainland.

The teen was remanded in custody to be sentenced by Judge Elizabeth Hollingworth on August 24.

Shocking dashcam footage has captured the moment an out-of-control Tesla narrowly missed oncoming traffic on a busy Adelaide freeway.

The footage, captured on the South Eastern Freeway yesterday, shows the car nearly missing several others as it hurtled down the wrong side of the road.

Police are investigating whether the driver suffered a medical episode.

The footage, first posted to Dashcams Adelaide Facebook group, showed the seconds before the Tesla crashed into a barricade.

The force of the crash forced the car to slam straight into a family.

"I would say if we were a quarter of a second faster or didn't brake then we probably would have taken out the Tesla driver," the driver told 9News.

There are no reports of any major injuries.
