A woman who claimed she could not remember stabbing her lover a week after discovering he had been cheating has been found guilty of his murder.

Jenny Niguidula took a kitchen knife and stabbed Rhonie Apostol in their Sydney home on November 17, 2019, after the pair furiously argued outside the city's international airport a week earlier.

On learning that the 53-year-old had cheated on her with a nurse in Manila on November 10, Niguidula punched him in the head outside the airport after spending hours crying in the bathroom.

A week later he was found stabbed and bleeding in the bathroom of their South Wentworthville home.

Attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

At the time, Niguidula herself was having an affair with Apostol after she married his brother-in-law Jonathan Olivares.

When police were called after the 53-year-old's death, Niguidula said his injuries were caused by his "stupidity" including by having an electric fan he was installing fall on his head.

She told police that her relationship with Apostol had been on the mend prior to his death and that she was having a happy time with him, going on the "perfect" date and having the best sex of her life.

She pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied she murdered her jilted lover.

A partial defence of substantial impairment, in which she claimed she had a mental health condition so severe she could not control her actions, was rejected by the jury.

Psychological evidence filed with the court showed a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

The matter will next come before Justice Hament Dhanji on June 9.

A 36-year-old cold case is nearing its long-overdue conclusion after a jury returned a guilty verdict for murder at a well-known gay beat in Sydney's east.

Stanley Bruce Early, 77, fatally bashed Raymond Keam in a park at night in 1987.

A NSW Supreme Court jury returned its guilty verdict on Wednesday after hearing that Early had attacked the 43-year-old martial arts expert in Randwick's Alison Park suspecting he was homosexual.

A post-mortem examination revealed he died from severe head injuries and a 1988 inquest found Keam died after being struck by a person or persons unknown.

Alison Park had a reputation for being a gay beat, crown prosecutor Ken McKay SC told the jury as the trial began.

The verdict comes despite a wholly circumstantial case being brought against Early with no witnesses seeing he had any contact with Keam.

In June 2021 a $1 million reward was offered for information about the murder.

Early was arrested at a home in Clayton, Victoria two months later and was extradited to NSW where he remained for the trial.

Keam's hitherto unsolved death was one of 88 killings between 1976 and 2000 recently reviewed by police probing potential gay-hate violence and allegations of prior inaction.

He identified as heterosexual, was divorced from one woman and in a de facto relationship with another, having a child with each.

The verdict comes despite a wholly circumstantial case being brought against Early with no witnesses seeing he had any contact with Keam.

A mother has broken down in court as she confronted the man who murdered her daughter and dumped her body in a wheelie bin.

Joon Seong Tan, 38, was last week found guilty by a jury of killing Ju 'Kelly' Zhang in her Epping home in Melbourne's north on February 2, 2021.

Tan had believed Zhang, his girlfriend of only one month, was cheating on him with another man so he killed her while her eight-year-old son was in another room.

He then cleaned up and moved Zhang's body first to a laundry cupboard and then a wheelie bin.

Tan drove the bin to Heidelberg West where he placed it with other bins for collection.

The following morning, after driving Zhang's son to school, he returned and watched the garbage truck empty the bin, before going back to Zhang's home where he reported her missing.

It took police four months to find Zhang's body at a Wollert landfill site.

She had suffered at least one stab wound to her heart.

During a pre-sentence hearing on Wednesday, Zhang's mother Renqun Li told the Supreme Court her daughter was a studious woman who should have had a bright future ahead of her.

When they found out their daughter was missing, Li and her husband Xiaoyou Zhang dropped everything in China, using donations from friends to get to Melbourne.

For months, they believed she had been kidnapped and they would see their daughter alive again but they never did.

"We often wonder why God is so cruel, why he let us lose our only child when we're entering elderly age," she told the court through a Mandarin interpreter.

Zhang's young son Jack still calls out for his mother, having persistent nightmares.

In his victim impact statement, the now-10-year-old told the court he felt alone and afraid without her.

Li called on Justice Mandy Fox to hand down a severe punishment to Tan, noting their only child was killed for his own selfish means.

"We hope in the end justice will prevail over evil and justice will be given to our family," she said.

Li pointed at Tan and yelled "you bastard" in Mandarin as she finished reading her victim impact statement.

She then broke down into heavy sobs and had to leave the court room before two workers from the Wollert tip read their statements.

Harry Taylor, the site's landfill manager, described feeling both elated and depressed when he lifted Zhang's small body from the mud-soaked garbage.

The tip's risk manager Christopher Smith choked back tears, saying his team felt grief for a woman they never met.

"(Tan) could have saved so many from unnecessary pain and anguish," he said.

Tan's barrister Greg Hughan said his client was moved by the emotional statements and he now admitted he murdered Zhang.

The 38-year-old claims Zhang had a knife by her bed and she grabbed it first while they were having an argument about their children, the barrister said.

Hughan submitted the admission showed Tan had accepted responsibility for his crimes and he would not lodge an appeal on his conviction.

"He doesn't want to perpetuate the grief," the barrister said.

But Justice Fox said she would not accept Tan's version of events, saying his admission did not demonstrate evidence of remorse.

Tan will be sentenced at a later date.

The incident happened near roundabout at intersection of Forest Hill Rd and Pine Ave.

Milton Orkopoulos, the former NSW government minister who was convicted earlier this year of child sexual abuse, has been assaulted in prison.

A spokesperson for the state's correctional services confirmed the 65-year-old was hospitalised after being attacked by fellow inmates at Long Bay jail.

"A 65-year-old inmate has received treatment in hospital following an assault at the Metropolitan Special Programs Centre, at Long Bay," a Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman said.

"At about 12.15pm on Tuesday, 6 June 2023 correctional officers initiated a medical response after the man was discovered with suspected head injuries.

"NSW Police were notified.

"Corrective Services NSW takes great care to determine appropriate security classifications and placements for inmates to maintain the safety and security of our prisons."

Orkopoulos was in April found guilty of sexually abusing four teenage boys while he was a state MP.

The 65-year-old has also previously pleaded guilty to possessing child abuse material in 2006 and to supplying a year 12 boy with drugs in Parliament House.

He is currently awaiting sentencing after a jury in April found him guilty of 26 out of 28 charges of sexual offences against four underage boys he allegedly supplied drugs to over a decade, ending in 2003.

Orkopoulos was found not guilty on one count of supplying prohibited drugs and one count of doing an act to pervert the course of justice.

Bottled water and free blood tests are on offer for students and staff after lead was detected in the water supply of a remote north Queensland educational facility.

Preliminary testing found lead present in water samples at Yarrabah State School's primary and secondary campuses, as well as the kindergarten.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said "appropriate and precautionary" measures were being taken while further testing was underway to find the source of the contamination.

"The immediate health risks are minimal," Gerrard said.

"Out of an abundance of caution, children and staff at Yarrabah's kindergarten, and primary and secondary schools will use bottled water for drinking until we are certain supplies are safe to ingest."

He said it was still safe for children and staff to use the water for non-drinking purposes.

Voluntary blood tests will be available at the Gurriny Workshop Road Clinic from Friday.

The water supply to Yarrabah town as a whole does not contain lead and was safe to drink, Gerrard said.

"As is the case with any water supply, contaminants can sometimes leach into drinking water from plumbing fittings and can accumulate if taps are left unused. Running the tap usually solves the problem," he said.

"I recommend everyone in Yarrabah routinely run their kitchen tap for 30 seconds first thing in the morning in case there is corrosion in their plumbing, and for two minutes if they haven't used it for more than two days."

The water supply at the schools was tested after lead was last month found in water at the Yarrabah Health Facility in May.

Patients and staff are also being provided with bottled water, and staff with blood tests, which have so far all come back negative.

Ingestion of lead can lead to health problems, with children and unborn babies more affected than adults.

Physical contact with lead does not present a health risk.
