Scammer steals pensioner's $25k life savings

An elderly Sydney woman says she feels "violated" after a fraudster stole $25,000 from her by tricking her daughter in an impersonation scam.

Maureen Deans, 86, was left with just $200 in her St George Bank pensioner account after the scammer struck last month.

"How could they be so cruel? I'm horrified that people would do this sort of thing," Maureen said.

"I was left with no money to pay my bills."

Maureen Deans' savings have been wiped out after a scammer stole $23,500 from her.

The nightmare began for Deans and her daughter Joanne on July 29.

On that day, Joanne got a text message from Medicare saying she had been in close contact with someone who had COVID-19.

It asked her to click on a link to order a coronavirus test kit.

Services Australia has issued warnings about similar scam SMS messages, but at the time Joanne was not aware of them.

"Someone at my work had just tested positive to the coronavirus. I could just kick myself now, but that's the reason I clicked on the link," she said.

Do you have a story? Contact reporter Emily McPherson at scam report Australian banks were in a unique position to help shut down scams.

The consumer watchdog has called on banks to adopt similar methods to those already in place in the UK, where banks match an account number to the name of the intended recipient.

Scammer red flags:

  • Unsolicited contact: They unexpectedly call, SMS or email you claiming to be from a reputable business

  • They know personal information: They have often already fraudulently obtained personal details like your name, ending digits on your credit card or approximate location, which makes them appear legitimate

  • They want you to action something: They will often instruct you to complete an action while on the phone to them – like updating your banking details, increasing your daily payment limit, downloading an app or sending money to a "new" account

  • They use spoofing software: They may use software to send you a fake SMS that appears to be from the business they say they're calling you from while on the phone with you to convince you the call is genuine.

PM insists Optus should pay for passport replacements

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has insisted Optus should pay for new passports of data leak victims as the government flags an overhaul of cybersecurity and privacy laws.

He told Parliament yesterday there needed to be clear consequences for companies that fail to properly secure data after millions of people's private details were expose in the Optus hack.

"Clearly, we need better national laws after a decade of inaction to manage the immense amount of data collected by companies about Australians," he said.

OPTUS DATA LEAK: What do I do if my details have been hacked?

Nearly 10 million people are now at greater risk of identity fraud after their personal details were compromised in last week's cyber attack.

Optus confirmed last night about 37,000 Medicare numbers were exposed, including nearly 15,000 that are still valid.

The telco will be contacting those with current cards affected within 24 hours.

The prime minister is also demanding Optus pay if new passports need to be issued for affected people.

Albanese rejected opposition calls that the government should foot the bill for reissued passports.

"We believe Optus should pay, not taxpayers," Albanese said, adding the breach was "caused by Optus and their own failures".

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has also demanded Optus pay for victims of the data leak to get new passports.

Wong has written to Optus bosses to tell them to cover the $301 fee for a new document, if they want to apply for one.

"There is no justification for these Australians – or for taxpayers on their behalf – to bear the cost of obtaining a new passport," she said.

Parts of Sydney smashed by hail, heavy rain

Parts of western Sydney have been pummelled with hailstones as much of the New South Wales coast braces for wild weather.

Glenmore Park and Penrith have been hit with heavy rain and hail, while a severe thunderstorm warning remains in place for much of the city.

Two slow-moving storms are making their way across Sydney and could cause flash flooding, the weather bureau said.

While Sydney appears to be right in the firing line, the warning area stretches from Nowra on the south coast all the way up to Newcastle.

Earlier a warning was issued for residents living on New South Wales' north coast, with dangerous hail, damaging winds and a dumping of rain forecast.

People along the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers are particularly in the firing line as conditions significantly worsen in the coming hours.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has warned residents at Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Taree, Sawtell and Dorrigo to hunker down and the storms sweep the coast, and to secure lose items and move cars undercover.

"A low and associated trough is moving through northeast NSW today, generating thunderstorms this afternoon and evening," the BoM said.

"Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. Stay vigilant and monitor conditions."

Overnight, wild storms swept across the state leaving a slew of damage in its wake.

The SES responded to over 100 incidents, with Lithgow, Moss Vale and Mount Druitt among the worst-hit centres.

A total of 15 flood warnings remain in place across the state.
