'Perplexing' reason for split in major Australian church

A landmark schism in one of Australia's biggest churches has underscored the deepening religious divide in the country.

Geoffrey Smith, the Primate of the Anglican Church in Australia, today issued a statement lamenting the establishment of a breakaway diocese by some church members.

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, some conservatives within the church who oppose same-sex marriage have gathered under the leadership of former Sydney archbishop Glenn Davies to establish the Diocese of the Southern Cross.

Davies told the Herald he predicted the defection would "send shivers down the spines" of some Anglican bishops in Australia.

The Diocese of the Southern Cross' website says it is made up of churches all across Australia "dedicated to faithfully proclaiming the gospel".

But Smith, an Adelaide archbishop who heads the Anglican Synod in Australia, criticised the move.

"It is unfortunate that confusion may well result from the establishment of this organisation among existing members of the Anglican Church of Australia and among people wishing to connect with the Anglican Church of Australia," he said.

"The meeting of the General Synod held in May this year clearly affirmed the view that marriage is between a man and a woman, and declined to affirm same sex marriage.

"It is perplexing therefore that the leaders of this breakaway movement cite the reason for this new denomination as the failure of General Synod to explicitly express an opinion against the blessing of same sex marriages."

He called on churchgoers to live together with their differences in a "tragically divided world".

"My conviction is that the Anglican Church of Australia can find a way to stay together, graciously reflecting God's great love, with our differences held sincerely," Smith said.

"This week's announcement makes achieving that end more difficult but not impossible."

The Diocese of the Southern Cross has acknowledged the role of GAFCON, the conservative Global Anglican Future Conference, in their founding.

"The formation of the diocese has been welcomed by GAFCON Primates," the organisation says on its website.

"There are similar dioceses in the USA, Canada, Brazil and New Zealand, where the established Anglican Church in these countries has departed from the teaching of Scripture."

The new diocese confirmed it was not part of the Anglican Church of Australia.

The findings from the 2021 census showed the Anglican church in Australia had experienced one of the steepest decreases in numbers of adherents.

From 2016 to 2021, Anglican affiliation fell from 3.1 million to 2.5 million people.

This was a decrease of nearly one in five Anglicans (19.5 per cent), from 13.3 per cent to 9.8 per cent of the population.

Australia's unemployment rate plummets to lowest level in 48 years

Australia's unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level in nearly half a century as almost 20,000 workers found jobs in the past month.

New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed that in July 2022 the unemployment rate fell by 0.1 per cent from 3.5 per cent to 3.4 per cent.

It is the nation's lowest unemployment rate since August 1974.

Explained: How is Australia's unemployment rate measured and why does it matter?

Bjorn Jarvis, head of labour statistics at the ABS, said both employment and unemployment measures fell in July.

"The fall in unemployment in July reflects an increasingly tight labour market, including high job vacancies and ongoing labour shortages, resulting in the lowest unemployment rate since August 1974," Mr Jarvis said.

"In July, there were fewer unemployed people (474,000) than there were job vacancies (480,000 in May)."

The unemployment rate fell for men (down 0.2 percentage points) to 3.4 per cent, and remained steady at 3.4 per cent for women.

Unemployment is at its lowest rate since 1974.

A criticism often made of the headline unemployment rate is that it does not accurately represent underemployment, which is where workers wish to take on more hours but cannot do so.

Today's figures showed the underemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 6.0 per cent, while the youth underemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 14.1 per cent.

The underutilisation rate, which combines the unemployment and underemployment rates, fell by 0.2 percentage points to 9.4 per cent, its lowest level since April 1982.

Jarvis said the July reference period coincided with the winter school holidays, worker absences associated with COVID and other illnesses, and further flooding events in New South Wales.

"In addition to people taking annual leave around the winter school holidays, there were also around 750,000 people working fewer hours than usual due to being sick in July 2022, around double the usual number we see during the middle of winter," he said.

"Given the extent of sickness within the community during July, some people who were on annual leave over the school holidays may have also been sick or caring for others."
