Video shows incredible waterspout off coast of Greece

Video footage has emerged of a massive waterspout moving around the coast of Greece.

The spout can be seen hovering off the coast, not far from the town of Paliouri, in clips posted on social media late last night.

Paliouri lies on the Kassandra peninsula, about 300 kilometres north of the capital, Athens.

There are no reports of any injuries or damage caused by the vortex.

While waterspouts appear similar to tornadoes, they are generally much smaller and less intense, and tend to only last a short period of time – most finish in five minutes or under.

They can form when two opposing winds collide, creating a high amount of rotating air, and are more likely to be created when air temperatures are relatively cool while the water remains warm.

They are most common in tropical waters, but it is not particularly unusual for them to be seen in Greece and elsewhere in the Mediterranean Sea.

Anne Heche taken off life support after car crash

Anne Heche, an entrancing actor whose versatility powered an admirable career in television and film spanning four decades, is no longer on life support.

"Anne Heche has been peacefully taken off life support," a representative for the actress' family told CNN. Heche's car crashed into a Los Angeles home and erupted into flames on August 5.

After the accident, Heche experienced a "severe anoxic brain injury," depriving her brain of oxygen, among other critical injuries following the crash, her family and friends said in a statement to CNN.

Anne Heche attends the Los Angeles premiere of Amazon Studio's "The Tender Bar" at TCL Chinese Theatre on December 12, 2021 in Hollywood, California.

Heche, an award-winning actor, appeared in films like the 1998 "Psycho" remake and the rom-com "Six Days Seven Nights" alongside Harrison Ford. She also directed a segment of a 2000 HBO film "If These Walls Could Talk 2" and in her 2001 memoir, she revealed her lifelong struggles with mental illnesses after being abused by her father.

In 1987, Heche made her TV debut on the soap opera "Another World," a role for which she won a Daytime Emmy. After leaving the show, she began her film career, appearing in acclaimed films including "Donnie Brasco" and "Wag the Dog."

When Heche and Ellen DeGeneres began dating in 1997 – around the same time DeGeneres came out in real life and on her titular sitcom – they quickly became one of the most famous same-sex couples in the world. The two separated in 2000.

Last year, Heche told Page Six her relationship with DeGeneres resulted in her losing roles, calling herself "patient zero of cancel culture."

Still, she said, she considered herself "part of the change" that helped normalise same-sex relationships in mainstream culture.

"I'm a part of it," she told Page Six. "It is a badge of honour."

In her 2001 memoir, "Call Me Crazy," she said her father sexually abused her as a child, and she experienced mental illnesses for much of the first 30 years of her life. She told CNN's Larry King in an interview that year her personality fragmented between herself and a personality she invented as a child to adapt to the abuse.

"I had to live through a lot of life to get to the place where I am now," she told King. "I had to see truths and work through shame, and I'm very grateful for every step that I took. I don't think that I could have handled it sooner."

In 2004, Heche appeared on Broadway in "Twentieth Century," for which she was nominated for a Tony. In more recent years, Heche returned to television, appearing on series like "The Brave," "Quantico" and "Chicago P.D." In 2020, she competed on the 29th season of "Dancing with the Stars."

Heche's Hollywood peers responded to news of her crash with support. Her ex-partner and "Men in Trees" co-star James Tupper, with whom she shares one of her two sons, wrote on Instagram: "Thoughts and prayers for this lovely woman, actress and mother tonight Anne Heche. We love you."

Albanese to investigate claims of Morrison's secret portfolios

Anthony Albanese says he is investigating how Scott Morrison was able to take on extra portfolios in secret during his time as prime minister.

It comes as Australia's Governor-General David Hurley confirmed he had appointed Morrison to "administer portfolios other than the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet".

Albanese said he had sought advice from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet following a News Corp report that Morrison was sworn in as the second resources minister in December last year without the knowledge of some of his cabinet.

Former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce told News Corp that Morrison used his ministerial powers to stop controversial gas projects slated for the NSW coast, which teal independent candidates – an increasing election threat – opposed.

The report follows a new book, Plagued, by Simon Benson and Geoff Chambers, which claims Morrison also swore himself into the health and finance portfolios.

Scott Morrison ordered the announcement of a people-smuggling vessel interception mid-operation.

"This is extraordinary and unprecedented," Albanese said.

"Australians knew during the election campaign that I was running a shadow ministry.

"What they didn't know was that Scott Morrison was running a shadow government, a shadow government that was operating in the shadows."

Albanese said he had spoken with the Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, who would be seeking advice from the Solicitor General, among others, on the legality of Morrison's extra portfolios.

"I'll be getting a full briefing this afternoon," Albanese said.

Barnaby Joyce has served as the 17th deputy prime minister of Australia under Malcolm Turnbull from 2016 to 2018 and Scott Morrison from 2021 to 2022.

"We all know that Scott Morrison had trouble doing the job that he had. Perhaps it was because he was doing so many different jobs that we didn't know that he had."

Albanese said Australians deserved an explanation as to what had occurred.

"This isn't some local footy club. This is a Government of Australia, where the people of Australia were kept in the dark as to what the ministerial arrangements were.

"It's completely unacceptable."

Anthony Albanese addresses the media about claims Scott Morrison held secret additional portfolios during his time as prime minister.

In a statement released today, Hurley said Morrison's appointments were consistent with the constitution.

"It is not uncommon for ministers to be appointed to administer departments other than their portfolio responsibility," Hurley said.

"These appointments do not require a swearing-in ceremony – the governor-general signs an administrative instrument on the advice of the prime minister.

"Questions around appointments of this nature are a matter for the government of the day and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

"Similarly, the decision whether to publicise appointments to administer additional portfolios is a matter for the government of the day."

Earlier this morning, David Littleproud, who replaced Joyce as the Nationals leader ABC's RN Breakfast program he did not know about Morrison's extra ministerial roles.

"That's pretty ordinary, as far as I'm concerned. If you have a cabinet government, you trust your cabinet," Littleproud said.

"You create that environment in the cabinet room to have those discussions.

"If you don't think a minister's suitable to do that, that's a discussion with the minister [and you] probably ask him or her to remove themselves."
