Five men have been arrested, and two have been charged with murder after a man was fatally stabbed in Melbourne last weekend.

Police said Western Australian man Alier Riak, 23, died after being stabbed in Bourke Street in Docklands following reports of an alleged brawl at about 3.20am last Sunday.

Officers said his 26-year-old brother, Kuol Riak, was also seriously injured.

Police carried out warrants at two homes yesterday morning.

A 19-year-old Derrimut man and a 21-year-old Wollert man were arrested and interviewed by police.

A 21-year-old Tarneit man was arrested in Docklands last night and also interviewed by police.

The Tarneit and Derrimut men were charged with murder, while the Wollert man was charged with affray and violent disorder.

All three faced Melbourne Magistrates' Court last night and were remanded in custody.

Meanwhile, police arrested a 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old man this morning after warrants were executed at properties in Taylors Hill and Epping.

They will be interviewed by police.

Victoria Police Crime Command Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill said while Melbourne is "a great city and overwhelmingly a safe city" incidents such as "those we sadly saw last weekend impact all of us".

"Our thoughts are very much with the Riak family at this time, who are no doubt suffering an immeasurable amount of grief," Mr Hill said.

"We will continue to ensure all the relevant support services are made available to them."

A saltwater crocodile made a splash with locals at a popular Darwin beach on Friday.

Tiwi resident Jill Huck was among the beachgoers who spotted the reptile paddling in the shallows of Casuarina Beach at about 7am.

There was a mixture of "concern and intrigue" as Ms Huck and several dog walkers took photos from a distance.

"There was a bit of excitement on the beach," Ms Huck said.

"Even though you know they're out there, you don't see them very often."

Ms Huck said she has only seen two of them at Casuarina Beach in the past 18 months.

When Ms Huck shared her photos on social media, they generated a lot of interest.

"We like a good crocodile story here in the Northern Territory," she said.

New South Wales has reported 12 COVID-19 related deaths while Queensland recorded 10 fatalities overnight.

NSW has recorded 19,060 new cases in the past 24 hours.

This is a slight drop in case numbers from yesterday's 20,050 infections.

The state recorded 1090 people in hospital with the virus and 29 admitted to ICU.

There were 1060 people in hospital yesterday and 32 ICU admissions.

Queensland

Queensland has recorded 7120 new COVID-19 cases overnight.

The state also reported 10 deaths.

There are 235 people in hospital with the virus and 18 people in ICU.

Today's case numbers have slightly risen in comparison to yesterday's 6103, but hospitalisations have dropped.

Victoria

Victoria has recorded 7847 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours.

There were also two deaths.

This is a drop from yesterday's 9036 infections.

There are 210 people in hospital with the virus and 23 people in ICU.

This number has risen from yesterday's 199 hospitalisations and 23 ICU admissions.

Concerns over another wave of COVID-19 in coming months

Authorities are warning of yet another wave of COVID-19 cases in the autumn months due to the emergence of the BA.2 Omicron variant.

Infectious disease modeller Professor Nick Golding said it's hoped the next wave will be "half" the size of previous waves.

"Hopefully not as big as the previous spike," he said.

"We think the infections from BA.1 Omicron protect you against BA.2.

"Which means it's not going to get to a huge peak like the last."

"Hopefully smaller, maybe half as small."

It comes as health workers are hitting the streets in Perth today to conduct COVID-19 testing to understand the transmission of the virus in the community.

"We want to know how much COVID-19 there is in Perth we're not finding," Professor Golding said.

"We know there are asymptomatic cases."

Professor Golding called the testing a "research project" to understand community transmission and predict the next wave of the virus.
