Shark sighting at Manly forces closure of beach

A shark sighting at Manly has forced the closure of the beach just hours after flags were set up for the day.

Swimmers fled the water after the shark alarm went off following a sighting near Manly Beach.

The stretch of sand from Manly Beach to Queenscliff is now closed.

Manly Beach has been shut after a shark was spotted.

"What we have to do is we have to understand that sharks are in the water," a local told Today.

"When you swim, you swim at your own risk."

"Growing up like around the water and doing this sport like from nippers, you're always aware of the risk," another local said.

"Obviously, at the end of the it's our home as well as their home."

The closure comes as authorities remain on high alert following a string of shark attacks that plagued the state earlier this week, with four separate incidents in 48 hours.

The area is currently being assessed, and the beach is set to reopen once it is deemed safe by authorities.

The closure comes as Surf Lifesaving is ramping up its increased drone surveillance and extra rescue crews to keep people safe this long weekend.

Enormous bruise spotted on Donald Trump’s hand

The White House has explained a massive bruise on Donald Trump's left hand.

While at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the president was sporting a red and black bruise several centimetres in diameter.

But White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump bruised his hand after hitting it on the corner of a table.

"At the Board of Peace event today in Davos, President Trump hit his hand in the corner of the signing table, causing it to bruise," Leavitt said.

Though there were many cameras in the room, the moment does not appear to have been filmed.

This year the president has frequently had a prominent bruise on his right hand.

At other times, his hand has been covered in a thick coating of makeup or with a large Band-Aid.

The White House has said the bruise stems from shaking so many hands.

Donald Trump has often had serious bruises on his hands.

But the president does not shake hands with his left hand.

Trump previously told the Wall Street Journal that he was taking 325mg of aspirin a day, more than three times the daily recommended dose unless you have pain, fever or inflammation.

"They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don't want thick blood pouring through my heart," he said.

"I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart."

A person with thin blood is more likely to bruise.

The Journal also reported his hand started bleeding after getting a high-five from now-Attorney-General Pam Bondi at last year's Republican National Convention.

A bruise can be seen on the back of Donald Trump's left hand.

The White House has been loath to admit any physical malady from Trump, with a statement issued in December declaring his "excellent" health.

"President Trump's cardiovascular imaging is perfectly normal," his osteopath Sean Barbabella said.

"There is no evidence of arterial narrowing impairing blood flow or abnormalities in the heart or major vessels.

"All major organs appear very healthy and well-perfused.

"Everything evaluated is functioning within normal limits with no acute or chronic concerns."

Trump is 79, making him the second-oldest president of all time.

By the end of his term, he will be the oldest.

In Davos yesterday, Trump appeared to repeatedly mistake Iceland for Greenland.

In his speech, the president referenced Iceland four times in a context that seemed to fit his previous remarks on Greenland.

"I'm helping Europe, I am helping NATO, and until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me," he said.

"(NATO is) not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you. Our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland.

"So Iceland's already cost us a lot of money."

Sydney travel agent who scammed clients spared more jail time

A travel agent who cancelled customers' flights and pocketed thousands of refunded dollars, blaming global events, has avoided more time behind bars over her betrayal of trust.

Travel World Sydney operator Zahra Rachid's simple but effective fraud ran for more than eight months, purportedly to keep her struggling business afloat.

At least one of the victims arrived at Sydney Airport ready to fly to Europe, only to be told their plane ticket didn't exist, the Downing Centre Local Court was told.

That person had to fork out more money on the spot to book new flights and keep their holiday plans.

All up, eight victims were defrauded of amounts ranging from $2000 to $50,360 before Rachid's arrest in August 2024.

"The total amount that she gained is significant," magistrate Susan Horan said.

"$2000 to one person may be significant life savings, as $50,000 might be to people in other financial circumstances.

"People were trusting her with their money."

In all but one case, Rachid booked the customer's flights, cancelled them and then passed on the cancelled booking to the customer as though it remained valid.

The scheme netted her more than $77,000.

Not a cent had been repaid by Rachid before her sentence on Friday, something not lost on the magistrate.

The former travel agent's earning ability had been significantly curtailed since her arrest, including 255 days in custody on remand and another 11 months on strict bail conditions that effectively imposed home detention.

But she has not sought to compensate the victims in some small way, the magistrate said.

"Actions speak louder than words," Horan said.

As she jailed the agent for a minimum of six months, Horan noted guilty pleas to eight counts of fraud, Rachid's lack of criminal history and "deep and genuine" remorse.

Rachid had worked for 15 years in the industry before taking over a small business which catered to those wanting to travel to the Middle East.

The travel agency was "knocked for a six" by restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then travel advisories related to Israel's war in Gaza, her barrister Ertunc Ozen SC earlier told the court.

"This was an extraordinary, admittedly serious criminal response to an extraordinary set of circumstances," Ozen told the court.

The financial stress at the time included the loss of her apartment as she funnelled cash into the struggling business.

Diagnoses of chronic anxiety and panic attacks were also cited as reasons for poor decisions under pressure.

Other fraud charges were dropped after Rachid entered guilty pleas in November.

Highlighting a need to send a message to other small business owners, Horan sentenced Rachid to one year in prison, with a minimum of six months.

With time served, she walked from court today.

The former agent was also ordered to repay $44,800 to the victims who had not already been compensated by their banks.

Police allege shooter was on bail for domestic violence charges when he killed three people

Warning: This article contains the name and image of an Indigenous person who has died.

A man accused of shooting dead three people, including his pregnant ex-partner, in the NSW central west yesterday was on bail for alleged domestic violence charges, police have confirmed.

Julian Ingram, 37, also known as Julian Pierpoint, is wanted on an outstanding warrant for alleged murder and is still on the run.

"The [alleged] offender was on police bail initially, three days later he went before the court, and the court saw fit to continue the police bail," Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland told media.

He said Ingram had not previously breached the bail conditions prior to the alleged shooting, which he deemed a domestic-violence-related incident.

"All the victims appear to be related to the offender," he alleged earlier today.

Holland also confirmed Ingram had never had a gun licence, with police working to find out how he allegedly came to have a firearm.

Holland said the last known sighting of Ingram, who is believed by police to be "armed and dangerous" was on a road outside of Lake Cargelligo.

"We are concerned about the local villages," he said.

"He has gone to those locations before."

Holland said there were 100 police officers searching for the alleged offender.

"There is police on almost every corner of Lake Cargelligo at the moment."

How the shooting unfolded

Emergency services were called to Bokhara Street in Lake Cargelligo at about 4.30pm yesterday.

Police found a 25-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man in a vehicle, both with gunshot wounds.

They were both treated but died at the scene.

They have since been named as Sophie Quinn, Ingram's ex-partner, and her friend John Harris.

Quinn was heavily pregnant and was due to give birth in March, it has been confirmed.

Quinn and Ingram separated last year, the family has told 9News.

Quinn's mother Cathy told the Sydney Morning Herald her daughter had "not a mean bone in her body".

Police also responded to a second shooting at Walker Street in the same town.

A 50-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man had been shot in the driveway of a home.

The woman, who has been named as Sophie's aunt Nerida Quinn, died at the scene, while the man was taken to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition, where he remains.

9news.com.au has chosen to not identify the 19-year-old man.

Both crime scenes are being forensically examined.

Lake Cargelligo shootingsJulian Ingram is accused of shooting three people dead.

One neighbour, Letitia, said when she and her sister heard the shots, she couldn't believe it was gunfire.

She said it was "surreal" for this to happen in the close-knit community.

"Everyone knows everyone here. And they were great people. I mean, nobody deserves this, but especially not them," she said.

She said the community was coming together, with offers of support for the bereaved emerging from all corners, despite the fear of the gunman still on the loose.

"Our community will be here for each other, but it's going to take time I think to even realise what happened," she said.

Ingram is described as about 165cm-170cm tall, of medium build, with short dark hair, and brown eyes.

He was last seen driving a Ford Ranger ute with NSW plates DM 07 GZ.

The ute is described as having council signage, a metal tray back, high visibility markings on the side, and an emergency light bar on the roof.

People in the town are being asked to remain inside if possible and "exercise caution" if outside.
