The daughter of an elderly couple who contracted coronavirus at Sydney's SummitCare aged care facility says more support needs to be offered to families in her situation.

Kathie Melocco told Today she was exhausted by the situation.

"It is really taking its toll – the thing that is incredibly stressful is the lack of support as families we're all given," Ms Melocco told Today.

"I have two parents struck down with this virus. I haven't had any extra support offered to our family at all. You would think with all the mental health advice we've been going through during the pandemic, the aged care sector would have that support available."

Ms Melocco said she was thankful her parents, who are childhood sweethearts, were allowed to isolate together as they recover from the virus, but said she was exhausted and didn't feel she was getting support from government authorities or the aged care home.

"Let's hope we get a protocol that if this ever happens again – God forbid – we have a system in place," she said.

"We get morning and afternoon updates from the aged care home, but up until last night, when I actually spoke up and said, 'No one's rung me to ask if there is anything they can do.'

"In terms of government, I mean, I genuinely would like to see BeyondBlue and all of the other mental health agencies swing into action and have a protocol for supporting families."

Ms Melocco also said she was frustrated she couldn't see her parents, despite both of them and she fully vaccinated against coronavirus.

"This is the ridiculous thing. It's such a contradiction. We weren't allowed into the home. It was under lockdown. We couldn't see them. Yet I'm fully vaccinated. Mum and dad are fully vaccinated, but the aged care workers we now found out are not vaccinated," she said.

"It's very scary knowing that we could lose two parents at once and two people we desperately love – they have been our life, they have been there for us. It's now our time to be there for them."

Australia's south east is waking to brisk, icy conditions this morning while severe weather warnings are still in place for parts of the west coast after damaging winds and thunderstorms swept through overnight.

A high is keeping conditions settled and dry over parts of NSW, Victoria and South Australia, and this is leaving temperatures feeling a lot lower than they are, with that extra blanket coming in useful this morning.

Yesterday, Canberra recorded its coldest day in 12 years, with the capital measuring just 3.2C by midday and the mercury failing to climb past 6.3C.

WA hit by intense storms overnight

Western Australia's south coast was slammed by a severe thunderstorm overnight, which saw Rottnest Island record wind gusts of over 110km/h, while Perth Airport and Ocean Reef copped winds of up to 94km/h.

Perth's CBD recorded 21mm of rain while Gin Gin saw a downpour of 41mm in total.

While most of the extreme weather has subsided today, there are still severe weather warnings in place with more showers and storms expected in the city and surrounds.

WA's extreme weather is due to a powerful front and complex low moving over the southeast.

Morning frost and icy winds for east coast

Elsewhere, Queensland's north is headed for some showers today with Cairns and the Sunshine Coast likely to remain wet throughout the day.

Like Canberra yesterday, NSW will be chilly for most of today. While the sun will be out, less cloud coverage means conditions will feel colder than usual right through until later this afternoon.

Parts of Victoria will remain wet and cold today while South Australia and Tasmania will both be foggy with morning frost likely to evaporate by late morning.

Most of the Top End will remain warm and dry with tops of 21 and the odd shower along the coastline.
