Indonesian volcano unleashes river of lava in new eruption

Indonesia’s most active volcano erupted on Wednesday with a river of lava and searing gas clouds flowing 1500 metres down its slopes.

It was Mount Merapi’s biggest lava flow since authorities raised its danger level in November, Hanik Humaida, the head of Yogyakarta’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre, said.

Authorities in November had evacuated nearly 2000 people living on the mountain in Magelang and Sleman districts on Java Island but most have since returned.

There has been no new evacuation.

The alert was being maintained at the second-highest level and authorities told people to stay out of the existing five kilometre danger zone around the crater as the local administrations in Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces closely monitor the situation.

The 2968-metre-high volcano is on the densely populated island of Java and near the ancient city of Yogyakarta.

It is the most active of dozens of Indonesian volcanoes and has repeatedly erupted with lava and gas clouds recently.

Merapi's last major eruption in 2010 killed 347 people.

Indonesia, an archipelago of 270 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity because it sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines around the ocean.

Teenagers 'kicked and stomped' by violent mob at Australia Day party

An Australia Day beach party turned to bloodshed after a group of teenagers were ambushed by a violent mob at Perth's City Beach.

The group of party-goers were repeatedly hit, kicked and stomped on between 9pm and 10pm last night, leaving two hospitalised and five injured, Perth Police said.

Jamie, 16, says he was taunted then punched to the ground, surrounded by the mob and beaten so badly he was taken to hospital.

"My friend was about to get bashed and I've kind of jumped in the middle to try and separate them," Jamie told 9News.

"One of them [mob member] has just king hit me across the head, out of nowhere and then you already know I'm the next target, getting bashed."

A second teenager was also sent to the emergency department after losing a tooth in the violence.

"His eyes were sort of rolling back into his head slightly, he was bleeding all from his mouth, he lost a lot of blood and he was unresponsive for about I'd say 15 seconds," a party-goer said about the hospitalised teen.

According to the teenagers, the gang were demanding anything valuable including phones, wallets, jewellery.

"My phone was taken off me and I was threatened over the head with a wine bottle if I didn't reset my phone in 5 seconds, then they would have smashed me with it," a teenager said.

"I actually thought I was going to die."

The teenagers say the group was chanting BDK, the call sign of a notorious gang from Atwell, about 21 kilometres south of Perth CBD.

The group is known to ambush parties to steal belongings and "beat people".

The gang, who are also teens, have been found uploading and bragging about their crimes on social media.

"They attacked girls as well, they were kicking people's heads around like a soccer balls," a party-goer said.

Police have confirmed five teenagers were injured, however cannot trace the violence to a known gang.

"We'd like to catch these people as soon as we can," Acting Detective Inspector Stephen Crowley said.

Couple hit and killed by allegedly stolen car identified as parents-to-be

A couple hit and killed by a car while walking their dogs on Australia Day have been identified as parents-to-be Katherine Jane Leadbetter and her partner Matthew Philip Field.

A teenager has been accused of being behind the wheel of an allegedly stolen car and has been charged with murder.

Ms Leadbetter, 31, and Mr Field, 37, were struck by a Landcruiser 4WD after it sped through a red light at Finucane Road and Vienna Road in Brisbane last night.

The couple were expecting a child together.

Ms Leadbetter, an interior stylist, was six months pregnant at the time of the crash.

One of the couple's dogs, Frankie, went missing after the crash and was found in bushland today. She has been taken to the vet.

The couple's other dog is in the care of family.

A 17-year-old boy will face court today in Brisbane charged with the couple's murder.

Police allege he was driving a stolen Landcruiser 4WD when he went through a red light and ploughed into a truck at Alexandra Hills.

It's alleged the 4WD was stolen between 4pm and 5pm yesterday from a Cleveland house, prior to the deadly rampage.

Moments earlier, the 4WD was filmed appearing to engage in a road rage attack, deliberately colliding with a silver Hyundai at the intersection of Vienna and Finucane Roads before speeding away.

About 15 minutes later, he allegedly lost control of the 4WD after speeding through the red light at Finucane Road and Vienna Road and collided with the truck.

The Landcruiser rolled and struck the Alexandra Hills couple as they crossed the road.

"Despite the incredible efforts of witnesses and emergency services both pedestrians died at the scene," Assistant Commissioner Brian Codd said.

"The terrible tragedy has resulted in two, potentially three innocent lives being lost."

Mr Codd said witnesses and first responders are receiving support for the "incredibly catastrophic scene".

"We heard this terrific noise and we thought someone's had an accident," a witness told 9News.

"We thought it could have been us, we walk here often enough."

Police have also called on anyone who may have dashcam footage to contact police.

"Can I appeal to people to recognise that even the smallest piece of information could be vital in us building a case and understanding the circumstances that led to this tragic circumstance," Mr Codd said.

He said the families of the two victims are "devastated" by the incident and expressed his sympathies to those involved.

"Here's two people going about their innocent businesses on Australia Day, walking their dogs. They should be entitled to do that and now to have them ripped away from their families is absolutely tragic and it will weigh very, very heavily on first responders and witnesses. It shouldn't happen."

Floral tributes are growing at the site of the tragedy.

After crashing the car, police allege the 17-year-old then stole a set of keys from a nearby property and attempted to start a car in the garage.

He fled when approached by the owner of the home before being arrested by police a short time later, police allege.

He was taken to hospital for soft tissue injuries before being detained overnight.

The boy has been charged with two counts of murder, one count of dangerous driving while intoxicated, two counts of burglary, and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Police said additional charges may be laid as investigations continue and have urged anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward.
