Protesters clash with police in Melbourne CBD

Four people were arrested after trans rights protesters clashed with police in Melbourne this morning.

About 100 people gathered to counter protest a women's rights rally where attendees opposed new hate speech laws in the CBD this morning.

The legislation, which will come into effect next month, will carry up to five years jail time for those found to have vilified LGBTQIA+ people and people living with disabilities.

A flare was used during the protest in the Melbourne CBD this morning.

Dozens of police swarmed the CBD and used water-filled barriers to keep the two protest groups apart after clashes back in April.

After leaving the cordon and marching through the streets, a number of trans right protesters were arrested and held on the ground during a clash with officers.

Police fired pepper spray and a flare was launched into the air.

After moving in a loop back towards Parliament House, splinter groups turned on the media.

The protesters and police dispersed after a few hours.

Victoria Police said three of its officers were injured today but did not require hospital treatment.

Out of the four arrested, a 21-year-old has been accused of assaulting a police officer with an umbrella, while two others were accused of having flares on the streets.

Police also told 50 people to remove their face coverings during the protest.

While the Victorian government has said it would outlaw people wearing face coverings during protests, the rule has not come in legislation.

Police investigate suspicious car fire at Adelaide apartment block

Police are investigating a suspicious car fire in Adelaide's western suburbs.

Emergency services rushed to a unit complex on Marion Road in Brooklyn Park after the Nissan SUV was found alight before 9pm last night.

Nearby residents called Triple Zero after they smelt smoke and saw the flames burning dangerously close to homes.

The fire was burning dangerously close to homes at Brooklyn Park in Adelaide's west.

"I was a bit scared because it was so close to our house, but first thing I did was tell mum," a resident told 9News.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze but the Nissan was extensively damaged.

Police said checks revealed the car was allegedly stolen from a home in nearby Underdale hours earlier.

The Nissan SUV was extensively damaged following the blaze.

Residents who live near the unit block said there have been similar incidents in recent years and some people don't feel safe in the neighbourhood.

"I feel for the owner of the vehicle, there goes a bit of money, hard-earned cash down the drain," a resident said.

"Not surprised, it's not the first time this has happened, it's probably the third time since we've been here that there's been a fire in that area."

A car was set on fire in the same carport in 2023.

"It's been ongoing I think, so starting to feel not as safe anymore," another resident said.

Police are investigating the cause of last night's fire.
