A young boy has died after a fall at South West Rocks on the Mid North Coast of NSW.

His death comes after six people died and one remains missing in what lifesaving bosses have called an "absolutely horrific" weekend for drownings.

Emergency services were called to the shoreline of South West Rocks at about 3.30pm yesterday, where the nine-year-old boy had become stuck between rocks.

Firefighters managed to pull him out, but he died at the scene.

Earlier yesterday, a fisherman died and a teenager was taken to hospital after being washed off rocks in Sydney's south.

The pair were swept into the water at Wattamolla, in the Royal National Park, around 11am, in what is the sixth drowning death this Easter.

The rescue chopper found the teen and his father face down in the sea, unconscious, before winching them out.

The man died at the scene. He is yet to be identified.

His 14-year-old son was taken to the Children's Hospital at Randwick in a critical condition.

NSW Police are investigating.

It marks the worst Easter weekend on record for drownings in NSW with six dead and one missing.

On Easter Sunday there were 50 rescues in NSW with another 100 lives saved since Good Friday, 30 of them involving the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Surf Life Saving NSW bosses say a combination of hot weather, the long weekend seeing people flock to the coast, as well as the "enormous" swell proved a deadly combination.

"For such a religious weekend, this has been absolutely horrific from a coastal drowning perspective," SLSNSW CEO, Steve Pearce said.

"It would be the worst Easter drowning toll that we have seen in New South Wales on our records."

Close calls include a rock fisherman at Bass Point on the south coast and another at Avoca further north.

At Coffs Harbour three swimmers were pulled from the water by lifesavers.

Meanwhile, a search has resumed for a Parramatta man swept into treacherous seas off rocks in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs on Good Friday.

The 24-year-old was walking on rocks with friends around 1pm at Little Bay Beach when a big wave swept him into the sea.

He didn't resurface.

An urgent search was launched, with police, Marine Area Command, PolAir, Surf Life Saving NSW, Marine Rescue NSW, Ambulance paramedics and Randwick Council lifeguards involved.

It was called off by bad weather, but resumed on Saturday.

It has now restarted again, with Marine Rescue Botany Port Hacking among those involved.

Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Steve Raymond said they searched for more than seven hours yesterday.

Wild waves have been seen up and down the coast over the holiday, with experts issuing strong warnings.

In Victoria, a woman was killed after she was swept out to sea in San Remo, near Phillip Island.

She was walking with a group of friends when a large wave crashed over the rocks, dragging her and her husband out to sea.

A rescue mission was launched to try and find the husband. 

However, conditions have now eased in some areas, but beachgoers are still urged to take extra care.

The Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled a hazardous surf warning for Byron Coast, Coffs Coast and Macquarie Coast.

A 14-year-old girl was killed by a lioness outside the Kenyan capital Nairobi when she was snatched at a ranch bordering the southern edge of a national park, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said yesterday.

The animal had entered a residential compound near Nairobi National Park on Saturday night (local time) after jumping over a makeshift fence, KWS Senior Corporate Communications Manager Paul Udoto told CNN.

The lioness then entered a house and attacked the girl, who was inside with a second teenager.

"There is no evidence of provocation from the victims," Udoto said.

The second teenager immediately raised the alarm, prompting KWS rangers and emergency teams to respond to the incident.

Upon arrival, the team traced bloodstains leading to the Mbagathi River, where the girl's body was recovered with injuries on her lower back.

Authorities have set a trap and deployed teams to search for the lioness.

They are also trying to reinforce security measures, including electric fencing and AI-powered early warning systems to notify communities of nearby animal movements, Udoto said.

Separate animal attack

In a different incident on Friday, an elephant attacked a 54-year-old man while he was grazing livestock at a forest in Kenya's Nyeri County.

The man sustained chest injuries, fractured ribs and internal trauma, and was declared dead upon arriving at a hospital, KWS said.

The agency added that both attacks underscore a need for "continued investment in human-wildlife conflict mitigation – through strategic interventions, early warning systems, and strengthened collaboration with affected communities".

KWS teams are still investigating the attacks, but preliminary findings suggest both are "linked to broader ecological pressures and human encroachment on wildlife habitats", Udoto said.

KWS suspects the lioness was disoriented or diverted from her normal hunting behaviour due to a scarcity of prey in her natural range and increasing human activity around the park, Udoto added.

The elephant, meanwhile, attacked the victim after he entered the forest to graze livestock.

"It was the human activity that encroached upon the animal's range, creating conditions for conflict," Udoto said.

"KWS conveys its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and continues to work closely with local law enforcement and communities to enhance the safety of people living near protected wildlife areas," the agency said.

Lion and elephant attacks are considered relatively rare, but they can happen in isolated areas, near national parks and game reserves.

Lion attacks account for less than two per cent of all reported incidents involving humans and wildlife, Udoto said.

Elephant-related incidents are more common and tend to happen during dry seasons, when the animals migrate in search of water and food and encounter farmland or settlements, Udoto added.
