The beer is flowing at Munich's world-famous Oktoberfest for the first time since 2019.

People who have waited for up to 14 hours in the queue to Westminster Hall have been cheered up by none other than the King himself, as well as the Prince of Wales.

King Charles III and his son William made a surprise appearance at the Albert Embankment near Lambeth Palace, where they both chatted and shook hands with members of the public.

The lying-in-state queue snakes through London for about 8 kilometres, as mourners wait for their turn to pay respect to Queen Elizabeth II at her coffin in Westminster Hall.

Security guards were heard telling people to put their "phones down, shake hands and enjoy the moment", just as they did when the King met mourners outside Buckingham Palace last week.

Some mourners shouted "hip hip hooray" and "God save the King".

Overnight, volunteers distributed blankets and cups of tea to people in line as the temperature fell to 6 degrees Celsius.

The king was heard telling people to stay warm as they waited in line.

Despite the weather, mourners described the warmth of a shared experience.

"It was cold overnight, but we had wonderful companions, met new friends. The camaraderie was wonderful,'' Chris Harman of London said.

"It was worth it. I would do it again and again and again. I would walk to the end of the earth for my queen."
