'It's human nature to hope but there's no happy ending'

We all love a happy ending. Even in our darkest moments, it's human nature to cling to hope. That's what helps get us through difficult and dire situations.

A happy ending was the blessed outcome in the search for little Cleo Smith. Despite missing without a trace for two weeks, and many expecting the worst as each day passed, the four year old girl was found, safe and well just a kilometre from her Carnarvon family home in WA.

It was a miraculous moment we all shared – "Cleo's been found, and she's OK" – rang out around the country. Hope prevailed.

It was the same wonderful outcome for little AJ Elfalak.

The three-year-old non verbal boy was missing for three days, and we all held our breath, clinging to hope, as the intensive search went on. Against the odds, AJ was found safe and well, surviving by drinking water from a creek bed. Again, hope turned to joy.

'Their only hope now is to find William's remains. It's a cruel hope to cling to'

But in the case of William Tyrrell, there will be no happy ending. Police now admit that after seven years of searching, the little boy in the spiderman suit will not be coming home. Their only hope now is to find William's remains. It's a cruel hope to cling to.

NSW and Federal Police have stepped up their search after obtaining new information. They're throwing everything they have at finding any hint of William Tyrrell.

Any clue to reveal what happened on that fateful day in 2014 when he disappeared without a trace from a home at Kendall on the NSW Mid North Coast.

There are all sorts of theories.

Initially it was thought William had wandered off into thick bush near the home and was lost. Then the investigation turned to a possible kidnapping. Known sex offenders in the area were questioned. A possible pedophile ring was considered. The worst of the worst was the possible fate of a beautiful little boy

And yet there was always hope that perhaps, William might still at least be alive.

The case of William Tyrell will not deliver a happy ending, but the hope of finding something is essential to deliver answers and justice.

It's what William and his family deserves.
