A 28-year-old man counts himself lucky after a near-death experience with a crocodile.

While it didn't cost him his life – he did lose a couple of toes.

"I grew up in Daly River for most of my life, swimming with crocodiles," Leroy Daly told 9News.

"But I've never been bitten until now."

Mr Daly was out shooting magpie geese with friends on Tuesday afternoon when the attack occurred.

"The water wasn't even above my knee."

"We fired a couple of gun shots – we thought we'd see the grass move or something."

He was picking up a goose when he unknowingly stepped on a saltwater crocodile's head.

"I thought it might have been a log or something – but then felt its sharp teeth."

"You should have seen the size of it."

"It was way bigger than four metres."

The attack happened on Litchfield Station in between Daly River and Adelaide River.

The croc launched onto his foot, before retreating back into the water.

"It happened so quick, it was like a flash. I called out to everyone, jump out of the water. Next thing you know I was laying on the bank. I remember it trying to drag me back in."

"They started letting rounds off and then it swam away."

The Daly River man lost two toes and is now recovering in Royal Darwin Hospital.

He says his close encounter won't stop him from hunting in the future, telling 9News he had just been watching crocodiles on Animal Planet from his hospital bed.

But he has a warning for others.

"If you go out hunting, beware there are crocodiles everywhere."
